WHY IS AN APOSTILLE IMPORTANT

Why Do Work Visa Applicants Need an Apostille?

WHY DO YOU NEED AN APOSTILLE

When you apply to work in another country, the foreign government, consulate, immigration authority, employer, or licensing agency may require proof that your United States documents are authentic. An apostille certifies the origin of an eligible public document so it can be recognized in another country that participates in the Hague Apostille Convention.

Depending on your destination country and type of employment, you may be required to obtain apostilles for your background check, diploma, degree, professional license, birth certificate, marriage certificate, or other supporting documents.

BE AWARE, BE PREPARED

Every country and visa application has different document requirements.

Applicants should confirm the exact documents and certification requirements with their employer, immigration attorney, consulate, embassy, or visa agency before ordering.

Documents Commonly Apostilled for Work Visa Applications

Document requirements vary by destination country. We will review your documents and help determine the appropriate apostille processing path based on the document type and issuing authority.

DOES YOUR DESTINATION COUNTRY REQUIRE IT?

Countries Needing an Apostilled FBI Background Check for Work Visa Applications

Criminal background-check requirements vary by country, profession, employer, work-permit category, and consular jurisdiction. Some applicants must provide an apostilled FBI Identity History Summary, while others may need a state police clearance, a document issued by another country of residence, or no background check at all. Applicants should confirm current requirements with their employer, immigration representative, consulate, or the government authority processing the application.

Spain

Applicants for many Spanish long-stay employment visas must submit criminal-record certificates from countries where they have lived during the required lookback period. An FBI background check issued in the United States generally must receive a federal apostille and may also require an official Spanish translation.

Italy

An apostilled FBI background check is not a universal requirement for every Italian work visa. It may be requested for a particular profession, licensing process, employer, residence procedure, or other application, and U.S. public documents submitted in Italy may require an apostille and Italian translation.

United Arab Emirates

Authentication and Attestation

The United Arab Emirates does not use the Hague apostille process for U.S. documents. Applicants may instead need document authentication and UAE consular attestation, and a police-clearance or background document may be required for certain professions, employers, licensing authorities, or residence processes.

Portugal

Portugal generally requires adult national work-visa applicants to provide a criminal-record certificate from their country of nationality or from a country where they have lived for more than one year. For U.S. applicants, the appropriate federal background check must typically be accompanied by a Hague apostille.

Germany

An FBI background check is not routinely listed as a standard requirement for most German employment visas, including the EU Blue Card. A criminal-record document may still be requested for certain regulated professions, employer screenings, licensing applications, or individual immigration cases.

South Korea

An apostilled national-level criminal background check is commonly required for South Korea’s E-2 foreign-language teaching visa and may be requested for certain other employment or licensing processes. U.S. applicants should confirm whether an FBI Identity History Summary is required and how recently it must have been issued.

France

An FBI background check is not generally required for every French employment visa. Criminal-record certificates may be requested for certain professions, employer screenings, special residence categories, or individual cases, so applicants should follow the personalized document list issued through France’s official visa process.

China

China’s foreign work-permit process generally requires applicants to provide a certificate showing no criminal record. U.S. applicants may use an FBI background check when accepted by the processing authority, and the document must follow China’s current authentication or apostille requirements.

Mexico

An FBI background check is not a standard requirement listed for every Mexican work visa. Most employer-sponsored applications begin with authorization from Mexico’s National Migration Institute, but an employer, regulated profession, or immigration authority may request additional background documentation in an individual case.
